Itching in the skin can be quite a nuisance, especially when the skin is dry, irritated or feels tight. One of the oldest traditional remedies is a bath of lukewarm water with a little baking soda — a simple home solution that can give temporary relief and a feeling of calm.
Baking soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) is a basic substance, relatively gentle at low concentrations, and is found in almost every kitchen.
Why Is It Good?
- May temporarily ease the feeling of itching.
- Gives the skin a feeling of freshness.
- Can soothe mild discomfort after sweating.
- Allows a few minutes of rest in lukewarm water.
- Easy to prepare from ingredients already at home.

Fill the bathtub with lukewarm, pleasant water.
Add the baking soda and stir until it dissolves.
Get into the water and soak the body for 10 minutes.
Get out of the bath and dry the skin with gentle pats.
Apply moisturizing cream while the skin is still slightly damp.
For a full-body bath:
- A bathtub with about 80–100 liters of lukewarm water.
- 2 level tablespoons of baking soda (about 30 grams).
For a local hand or foot soak:
- 4 liters of lukewarm water.
- A quarter teaspoon of baking soda (about 1–1.5 grams).
You can try once to twice a week, according to how the skin feels.
To keep the feeling of softness after the bath, it is worth applying a rich moisturizing cream immediately after drying.
The combination of lukewarm water, a short soak and moisture can help especially when the itching is accompanied by dryness.
Did You Know?
Baking soda is a substance with a basic pH, which is why it is used in a variety of home recipes for cleaning and for care.
Despite its traditional use in baths to soothe itching, the research on its effectiveness is limited. The amounts in this recipe are especially diluted to reduce the chance of additional dryness or irritation.
Sometimes a lukewarm bath, a little baking soda and ten minutes of quiet are exactly the treat the skin needs.
