Why Does Our Skin Begin to Look Like Crumpled Paper, and Can Its Appearance Be Improved?

Sometimes we notice a strange change in the skin. It's not necessarily especially dry, but when we lift our arms or stretch the skin slightly, small dense fine lines appear that resemble crepe paper.

This phenomenon is called Crepey Skin, and it is especially common on the arms, the neck, the knee area, and additional parts of the body.

What causes the skin to look this way?

To understand the phenomenon, it's worth knowing two important proteins found in our skin: collagen and elastin.

Collagen gives the skin strength and support, and elastin allows it to stretch and return to its shape.

Over the years, the production and organization of these proteins change, and the skin gradually loses part of its elasticity and support.

Cumulative sun exposure also causes damage to the collagen and elastin fibers and accelerates these changes.

In addition, a decrease in the skin's moisture can emphasize the small fine lines.

Why does it appear specifically on the arms and knees?

In these areas the skin undergoes repeated movement and stretching.

Over the years, as the support in the tissues decreases, the changes become more prominent.

Changes in weight may also affect the skin's appearance, especially after significant weight loss.

Can drinking water solve the problem?

Adequate drinking is important for the body's health, but it cannot by itself restore collagen or elastin that has been lost.

If the skin is dehydrated, improving its moisture can cause the superficial fine lines to look less prominent.

But it's important to distinguish between an improvement in appearance and a real change in the skin's structure.

What ingredients can help?

Creams containing glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and ceramides can improve the moisture and reduce the rough appearance.

Certain retinoids may help improve the skin's texture over time, but they can cause irritation and are not suitable for everyone.

Daily protection from the sun is also very important, because it helps reduce further damage to the skin's fibers.

When there is significant laxity, cosmetic products alone usually won't be enough for a noticeable change.

And what about massage and physical activity?

I love combining massage and movement in my health routine.

Massage can give a feeling of softness and relaxation, and physical activity is important for maintaining muscle mass and general health.

But it's important to know that there is no good proof that regular massage restores to the skin the elastin that has been lost or makes crepey skin disappear.

My daily recommendation

I think we should begin caring for the body's skin long before we notice significant changes.

Not only on the face, but also on the arms, the neck, the knees, and every area exposed to the sun.

Moisture, protection from the sun, and gentle care are simple habits that can be maintained for years.

I don't expect my skin to remain as it was at age twenty, but I certainly want to keep it as healthy and pleasant as possible.

And in my eyes, that is the difference between trying to stop time and learning to age while caring for our body.
