We are used to associating dark circles under the eyes with tiredness and lack of sleep.

But sometimes we sleep well, maintain a skincare routine, and yet the area under the eyes looks dark.

So maybe it's not always about tiredness.

In fact, there are several different reasons that can cause dark circles to appear, and the difference between them is especially important when we try to treat the problem.

Why specifically under the eyes?

The skin in the eye area is relatively thin, and therefore changes in the blood vessels, in pigmentation, and in the structure of the tissues beneath it can be more prominent.

In some people it's a genetic tendency that appears already at a young age.

In others, the circles develop or become more prominent over the years.

Not all dark circles are created for the same reason

Pigmentation
Sometimes the skin itself contains more melanin in the area under the eyes. The condition can be related to genetics, to sun exposure, or to pigmentation created following irritation and inflammation.

Prominent blood vessels
Because the skin in the area is thin, the blood vessels beneath it can create a bluish or purplish appearance.

Changes in the structure of the face
Over the years we lose part of the volume and support of the tissues in the eye area. The hollow created under the eye can cast a shadow and create a dark appearance, even when the skin color itself hasn't changed.

Allergies and repeated rubbing
Allergies, eye irritation, and frequent rubbing may worsen the dark appearance, among other things because of inflammation and pigmentation.

Lack of sleep
Tiredness can emphasize existing circles, but it is not always their main cause.

Can an eye cream make the circles disappear?

It depends on the reason.

If it's dryness and fine lines, a suitable moisturizer can improve the area's appearance.

Certain ingredients, such as vitamin C and niacinamide, may help in some cases where there is pigmentation.

But if the dark appearance is created mainly because of a deep hollow or anatomical structure, a cosmetic cream won't be able to fill the missing volume.

This is the reason that not every product that promises to brighten dark circles will give the same result for everyone.

What can we do in daily life?

Maintain sufficient and regular sleep.

Use a sunscreen suited to the facial area and protect the eyes with sunglasses.

Avoid repeated rubbing of the eyes.

If there are allergies or persistent irritation, treat the cause with a professional.

And use gentle skincare products suited to the eye area.

If the darkness appears suddenly, mainly on one side, or is accompanied by significant swelling or additional symptoms, it's advisable to get checked.

My daily recommendation

Sometimes we look in the mirror and try to find a cosmetic solution to a problem whose source is not cosmetic at all.

Dark circles are an excellent example of this.

Before we buy another eye cream, it's worth understanding whether it's pigmentation, blood vessels, the structure of the face, or repeated irritation.

I believe that the better we understand the reason for the change in the skin, the more we can choose a more suitable treatment and save ourselves unnecessary attempts.

Because sometimes the knowledge about the skin is no less important than the products we apply to it.
