Skin & Wellness Magazine

Sometimes you notice it while shaving, in front of the mirror, or when trying on a swimsuit. The skin in the underarms or the groin looks darker than the rest of the body, even when you are careful about hygiene and care.

The phenomenon is very common, and it does not indicate a lack of cleanliness.

In fact, there are several reasons the skin in these areas changes its color, and not all of them are related to regular pigmentation.

Why Specifically the Underarms and the Groin?

These are areas where the skin is in continuous contact with other skin, clothing, sweat, and sometimes also skincare and hair-removal products.

The repeated friction can cause mild, ongoing irritation.

When the skin reacts to inflammation or injury, the cells that produce melanin may increase their activity.

The result is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation – darkening that appears following irritation or inflammation in the skin.

Can Shaving Cause Darkening?

Yes, especially when shaving causes small cuts, ingrown hairs, or inflammation around the hair follicles.

Using a dull razor, shaving against the direction of growth, or repeated passes over the same area can increase the irritation.

Waxing and hair removal by other methods can also cause pigmentation if an inflammatory reaction develops.

And What about Deodorant?

Some people develop sensitivity or contact dermatitis following certain ingredients in deodorants, especially fragrance substances.

When the irritation recurs over time, it may leave darkening behind it.

But not every deodorant causes pigmentation, and there is no reason to stop using it if the skin responds to it well.

If burning, itching, or peeling appear, it is worth checking whether one of the products is causing the irritation.

Sometimes the Darkening Is Actually Linked to Insulin

There is a skin condition called Acanthosis Nigricans.

In this condition, darkening of the skin appears, sometimes together with thickening and a velvety texture.

It is especially common in skin folds, such as the neck, the underarms, and the groin.

It is sometimes linked to insulin resistance, obesity, diabetes, or certain hormonal conditions.

That is why when the darkening is accompanied by thickening of the skin, appears in several areas, or develops for no clear reason, it is important to check whether there is a medical cause.

Do Hormonal Changes Affect Skin Color?

Hormones can affect the activity of the pigment cells.

During pregnancy, for example, increased darkening may appear in various areas of the body.

Other hormonal changes can also be linked to pigmentation changes, but not every darkening in the underarms or groin should be attributed to hormones alone.

Can the Skin Be Lightened?

The treatment depends on the cause of the darkening.

If it is pigmentation following friction or irritation, the first step is to reduce the factor that keeps injuring the skin.

You can choose less tight clothing, avoid aggressive rubbing, and use gentle cleansing products.

Ingredients such as niacinamide and azelaic acid may help in some cases of hyperpigmentation.

Preparations containing exfoliating acids can also help in certain situations, but the fold areas are especially sensitive, and incorrect use can cause irritation and worsen the darkening.

In stubborn cases, a dermatologist can tailor a dedicated treatment.

Can Lemon and Baking Soda Lighten the Area?

Although these are common home tips, it is not recommended to apply lemon or baking soda to the underarms and groin for lightening.

Lemon can cause irritation, and combined with sun exposure even a significant inflammatory reaction.

Baking soda can damage the skin's protective barrier and cause dryness and burning.

Instead of lightening the skin, the irritation created may actually lead to additional pigmentation.

Can Laser Hair Removal Help?

When the darkening is linked to repeated shaving, ingrown hairs, and inflammation in the follicles, reducing the hair by laser may help indirectly.

However, laser treatment can also cause pigmentation changes, especially when it is not matched to the skin tone.

It is important to choose an experienced practitioner and suitable equipment.

When Should the Darkening Be Checked by a Doctor?

When the darkening appears suddenly, spreads quickly, is accompanied by significant thickening of the skin, or also appears on the neck and in additional areas, it is worth going for a check.

Prolonged itching, pain, a rash, an unusual odor, or a change in the skin's texture also justify investigation.

Sometimes it is simple pigmentation, and sometimes an infection, inflammation, or another medical condition.

Can the Skin's Original Tone Be Restored?

In many cases the appearance of the darkening can be improved, especially when its cause is identified and treated.

But it is important to remember that skin tone is not uniform across all parts of the body.

The underarms and groin may be naturally dark even in completely healthy people.

The goal is not necessarily to make the whole body one uniform tone, but to keep the skin healthy, free of irritation and inflammation, and to treat color changes when they bother or indicate a problem that requires attention.
