Nature's Recipes

You don't always need to buy an expensive product to enjoy soft, tidy hair. Sometimes everything you need is already in our kitchen.

Flaxseeds, when cooked in water, release a natural substance with a gel-like texture that can be used to style the hair, reduce frizz, and give a feeling of softness and shine.

The gel is especially suitable for curly, wavy and dry hair, but it can also be used on straight hair in a small amount.

What you need:

  • 2 tablespoons whole flaxseeds
  • 1½ cups water
  • A clean glass jar

How to prepare:

  1. Put the flaxseeds and the water in a small pot.
  2. Bring to a boil and cook over low heat for about 7–10 minutes, stirring as it cooks.
  3. When the water takes on a slightly thick, gel-like texture, turn off the heat.
  4. Strain immediately, while the mixture is still warm, before it thickens too much.
  5. Let it cool and transfer to a clean jar.

How to use:

Apply a small amount to damp hair, mainly along the length of the hair and at the ends.

For curly hair, you can gently scrunch the curls upward to help them take shape.

The gel can also be used on dry hair to tidy unruly ends.

Why flaxseeds, of all things?

Flaxseeds contain polysaccharides that create a natural gel texture on contact with water. This texture coats the hair in a thin layer, helps reduce frizz and improves the hair's appearance.

It is important to know that the gel mainly gives a temporary cosmetic effect and does not repair damaged hair from within.

How long can it be kept?

Since the gel contains no preservative, keep it in a clean, closed container in the refrigerator and use it within 2–3 days. If there is any change in smell, color or texture, throw it away.

A small tip from me: don't cook the gel until it is very thick. It is better to stop while the texture is still a little runny. After cooling it thickens, and that way it will also be easier to apply to the hair.

Sometimes the simplest recipes are exactly the ones worth knowing.
