We Care for Our Face Every Day, but What Happens to the Skin of the Neck and Décolleté?

There is an area of the body we tend to forget in our skincare routine.

We cleanse the face, apply serums, creams, and sunscreen, but don't always continue the same routine to the neck and décolleté as well.

And then, over the years, we begin to notice fine lines, spots, and changes in the skin texture in these areas.

Why does neck skin change over the years?

Neck skin differs in its structure from facial skin in some of its characteristics.

In certain areas it is thinner, contains fewer sebaceous glands, and can be more sensitive to dryness and irritation.

Over the years, natural changes occur in it in collagen and elastin, two important components that contribute to the skin's strength and elasticity.

Prolonged sun exposure also affects its structure.

And what about the horizontal lines on the neck?

These lines can appear already at a young age.

They are affected by the neck's structure, by genetics, by repeated movements, and by the natural changes in the skin.

In recent years there has been much talk of a phenomenon called Tech Neck, following prolonged use of phones and screens.

Repeated bending of the neck can emphasize existing folds, but it's not correct to attribute all neck wrinkles to phone use.

Why does the décolleté develop spots and fine lines?

The décolleté area is often exposed to the sun, especially in a hot climate.

The sun's radiation can cause over the years pigmentation, changes in the blood vessels, and damage to collagen.

Fine lines created following sleeping positions may also be more prominent in this area.

Is a special neck cream needed?

Not necessarily.

In many cases it's possible to use the moisturizer and sunscreen suited to the face also in the neck and décolleté area.

The important thing is to choose products suited to the skin's sensitivity.

If using retinoids or acids, it's advisable to be especially careful, because neck skin may react with irritation even to concentrations the face tolerates well.

What should we do in daily life?

Continue applying moisturizer also to the neck and décolleté.

Maintain a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 at least on every exposed area.

Avoid prolonged sun exposure without protection.

Cleanse the area gently, without unnecessary scrubbing.

And it's also advisable to check the skin from time to time and pay attention to new changes in spots or lesions.

My daily recommendation

I think many times we treat the face as if it ends at the jawline.

But our skin continues also to the neck, the décolleté, and the rest of the body.

If we already devote a few minutes every day to facial care, it doesn't require a great effort to continue the routine a little lower as well.

Not out of a desire to hide our age, but to maintain the skin's health over the years.

Because in my eyes, good skincare is not only what we do when the changes already appear, but also the small habits we maintain long before that.
