Strengthening the Lip Muscles – Even Without Visible Movement
October 21 2026 – Nurit Rozenblat
We devote quite a lot of attention to the muscles of the body, but how many of us think about the small muscles around the mouth?
Our lips, too, are surrounded by muscles that we use all day long when we talk, eat, smile, or purse them. One of the main ones is the ring muscle of the mouth (Orbicularis Oris), which is responsible, among other things, for closing and pursing the lips.
Can a Muscle Be Strengthened Without Moving It?
The answer is yes. Our muscles are able to exert force even when no visible movement takes place.
This action is called an isometric contraction — activating a muscle against resistance, with almost no change in its length.
When we try to perform a movement but something limits it, the muscle can still contract and exert force. This is a principle used in strength training and in rehabilitation exercises as well.
A Simple Exercise for Strengthening the Lip Muscles
The following exercise is designed to activate the ring muscle around the mouth and gradually improve control over it.
Here is how to do the exercise:
- Take a flat, wide, clean object with smooth edges, and place it gently between your lips, without using your teeth.
- Try to purse your lips forward, as in a kissing motion, while the object limits the movement.
- Activate the muscles around the mouth against the resistance of the object. Even if you can barely see any movement, the muscles can still work.
- Hold the contraction for 5 seconds, without using excessive force.
- Relax your lips for 5 seconds and repeat the exercise 8–10 times, as long as there is no pain or discomfort.
The goal is not to press hard, but to feel the muscle and learn to activate it intentionally.
Learning to Know Our Muscles
One of the interesting things about muscle training is the ability to develop awareness and control over how we activate them.
At first, we sometimes need an object to help us feel the resistance and identify the muscle we are trying to activate.
But the more we practice and learn to control the muscles, over time we can activate them intentionally even without using objects.
Finding the muscles, identifying their action, and being able to control them are an important part of the practice. Over time, we can learn to perform the contraction even without external resistance, although significant strengthening of the muscle may still require resistance.
Does Strengthening the Lip Muscles Affect How the Face Looks?
The mouth muscles take part in facial expressions, lip movements, and their everyday function.
Focused practice may improve control over the muscles, their endurance, and in some cases their strength as well.
However, it is important to understand that strengthening the muscles does not guarantee the disappearance of wrinkles, lip enlargement, or skin lifting. Research on the aesthetic effects of facial exercises is still limited.
The Small Muscles Deserve Attention Too
We are used to thinking about strengthening muscles in the context of fitness training, weights, and movement, but the small muscles of the face are also part of our muscular system.
I love the idea that we can learn to know them, feel how they work, and gradually improve our control over them.
Not every contraction has to involve a big movement, and not every workout requires special equipment.
Sometimes it is precisely the movement that is barely seen that teaches us to know our muscles better.
