The Small Red Lines That Appear on the Face – and Why Don't They Disappear?
Nurit Rozenblat
Sometimes we notice a thin red line that appears beside the nose or on the cheek.
At first it's almost invisible, but over time we begin to notice a few more small lines.
We try to apply a cream to soothe redness, and sometimes the skin really does look calmer, but the lines themselves remain.
This phenomenon is called Telangiectasia, or a dilation of small, superficial blood vessels in the skin.
Why does it happen?
Beneath the skin's surface is a network of tiny blood vessels.
In certain situations these blood vessels dilate and become more visible to the eye.
There are several factors that can contribute to this, including cumulative sun exposure, genetic tendency, skin aging, and rosacea.
Prolonged and inappropriate use of steroids on facial skin may also cause prominent blood vessels to appear.
Is it related to skin aging?
In some cases, yes.
Over the years, the skin undergoes changes in the collagen structure and in the support it gives to the tissues beneath it.
Cumulative damage from the sun's radiation can also affect the small blood vessels and the appearance of the skin around them.
But prominent capillaries can also appear in young people, and therefore it's not correct to treat them only as a sign of age.
Can a face cream make them disappear?
Here it's important to distinguish between temporary redness and blood vessels that have already dilated and remained visible.
Gentle skincare products can help reduce irritation and redness that appears around them, but a regular cosmetic cream usually won't make dilated, permanent blood vessels disappear.
In cases where one wants to treat them aesthetically, a dermatologist can offer appropriate laser or light treatments.
What can be done to protect the skin?
Maintain daily protection from the sun, including a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 at least.
Avoid aggressive rubbing of the face and uncontrolled use of strong products.
If there is also rosacea, it's advisable to identify factors that trigger redness and adjust the skincare routine.
If many new blood vessels, bleeding, or additional changes in the skin appear, it's important to get checked.
My daily recommendation
I believe that one of the important things in skincare is understanding what a product is really capable of doing.
Not every skin problem can be solved with a cream, even if it's of very high quality.
Sometimes the role of daily skincare is to protect, to soothe, and to prevent further damage, and not necessarily to make disappear a change that has already occurred.
And the better we understand this difference, the more correctly we can choose the way in which we care for our skin.
