Skincare Doesn't End at the Jawline: Why It's Important to Care for the Neck and Décolletage Too
Nurit Rozenblat
There is something I notice quite a lot.
We invest so much in caring for our facial skin. We cleanse, apply serums, use creams, are careful about sun protection, and try to keep the skin healthy, fresh, and radiant.
But then the gaze drops a little below the jawline, and sometimes a completely different story is revealed.
The skin of the neck looks drier, fine lines begin to appear, and in the décolletage area changes in skin tone, sun spots, and sometimes deeper wrinkles can be seen.
And that is not necessarily because these areas age faster for everyone.
Sometimes the reason is much simpler.
We dedicate much less attention to them.
I always say our facial skincare routine should not end at the jawline.
For me, the care continues from the face, through the neck, and down to the chest line.
Why do the skin of the neck and décolletage need special attention?
Our skin is not identical in all parts of the body.
Skin thickness, sebaceous gland density, tissue structure, and exposure to environmental factors vary from area to area.
The skin of the neck is relatively delicate, and in parts of it there are fewer sebaceous glands compared to certain areas of the face.
Therefore it may be more prone to dryness and a feeling of tightness.
The décolletage area is also exposed to changes that occur in the skin over the years, including decline in elasticity, changes in collagen and elastin, and the appearance of fine lines.
But one of the most significant factors for premature aging of the skin in these areas is precisely sun exposure.
The sun does not stop at the jawline
We already know that cumulative exposure to sun radiation is one of the central factors for premature skin aging.
UV radiation can damage collagen and elastin fibers, contribute to the appearance of pigmentation spots, and increase the risk of skin cancer.
But while we are careful to apply sunscreen to the face, the neck and décolletage are often forgotten.
Shirts with open collars, dresses, tank tops, and swimsuits leave these areas exposed to the sun.
And so, over years, the skin in the décolletage area may accumulate sun damage without receiving the same protection we give the face.
This is one of the reasons a significant difference can sometimes be seen between the look of the facial skin and the skin below it.
And what about the wrinkles in the neck?
Not every wrinkle in the neck is created because of neglect or sun exposure.
Some of the wrinkles are a natural result of skin structure, genetics, repeated movements, and changes that occur with age.
Over the years, the skin gradually loses part of its elasticity, and the tissues beneath it change.
Repeated movements of bending the neck may also emphasize horizontal folds.
In recent years, some of these lines have come to be called Tech Neck, because of our habit of lowering the head and looking at the phone for hours.
But it is important to know that neck wrinkles exist also in young people, and sometimes they appear because of anatomical structure and genetics, and not only because of phone use.
Therefore there is no reason to panic over every line that appears in the neck.
Our goal is not to prevent the skin from moving or changing, but to maintain it in the best way over the years.
And what happens to the décolletage skin during sleep?
If you are used to sleeping on your side, you may have already noticed vertical lines in the décolletage area in the morning.
When we lie on our side, the skin in the chest area may fold and be pressed between the tissues.
Usually these lines soften after we get up and change position.
But over the years, as skin elasticity declines, repeated folds may become more prominent.
Does that mean we must sleep on our back?
Not at all.
If it is comfortable for you to sleep on your side and you sleep well, there is no need to sacrifice sleep quality out of concern for wrinkles.
Good sleep is important for general health and also for skin health.
Anyone who anyway feels comfortable sleeping on her back can choose to do so, but it is not an obligation and not a proven solution for preventing all décolletage wrinkles.
My simple rule: from the face to the chest line
I think one of the best ways to improve the skincare routine is not necessarily to buy more products, but to slightly expand the area where we use the products we already have.
Instead of stopping at the jawline, we can continue the care to the neck and décolletage as well.
Of course, it is important to adapt the products to the sensitivity of these areas, and not every active ingredient suited to the face will necessarily suit the neck too.
Step one: gentle cleansing
Exactly like the facial skin, the neck and décolletage also accumulate during the day sweat, natural oil, residues of skincare products, and dirt.
During the shower or facial cleansing, it is worth gently cleansing these areas too.
There is no need to scrub hard or use aggressive soaps.
Gentle cleansing that removes dirt without damaging the protective barrier of the skin is usually the right choice.
Step two: hydrating serum
If you use a hydrating serum for the face, you can consider continuing the application to the neck and décolletage too, provided the product suits these areas.
Ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin help attract water to the outer layer of the skin and improve the feeling of moisture.
Serums containing antioxidants, like vitamin C, may also integrate into a skincare routine, according to the formula and the sensitivity of the skin.
It is important to remember that the skin of the neck may respond differently from the facial skin, especially to preparations containing active acids or retinoids.
Therefore it is worth starting gradually and following the response of the skin.
Step three: moisturizer — and not only what remains on the hands
I think this is one of the most common habits.
We apply cream to the face, and then transfer to the neck what remains on our palms.
But the neck and décolletage are a significant skin area in themselves.
They deserve to receive a sufficient amount of moisturizer, and not only the leftovers.
A suitable moisturizer can help maintain the skin barrier, reduce a feeling of dryness, and temporarily improve the appearance of fine lines that become more prominent when the skin is dry.
I love applying the cream with gentle movements, without pulling the skin hard.
You can perform upward movements if that is pleasant for you, but there is no proof that the direction of application itself prevents sagging or wrinkles.
What matters is gentle touch and even application.
Step four: sunscreen every morning
If there is one step I think is especially important not to neglect, it is this step.
Sunscreen is not intended only for the face.
In every skin area exposed to the sun, including the neck, the ears, and the décolletage, it is important to use suitable protection.
I recommend choosing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 at least and applying a sufficient amount to all exposed areas.
If you are outside for a long time, it is important to renew the application about every two hours, and also after swimming or significant sweating.
In addition, clothes covering the area can provide important protection.
Sunscreen does not promise that wrinkles or spots will not appear, but it is one of the most important means for reducing cumulative sun damage.
And what about perfume on the neck and décolletage?
Many women love spraying perfume directly on the neck or in the décolletage area.
But it is worth knowing that some fragrance substances may cause irritation or an allergic reaction in the skin.
There are also certain scent ingredients, mainly those originating in plant extracts, that may cause skin reactions following sun exposure.
That does not mean every perfume causes pigmentation.
But if you have sensitive skin, a tendency to spots, or reactions to fragrance products, it is worth avoiding direct spraying on the area.
You can choose another area that suits you or spray carefully on clothes, after verifying the perfume does not leave stains on the fabric.
Do not forget the neck in the evening routine too
In the morning we think about sun protection, and in the evening we can focus on cleansing and moisture.
I love the idea that the evening skincare routine does not end with the face.
After gentle cleansing, you can apply a hydrating serum and a suitable cream also on the neck and décolletage.
Not because the skin renews only at night, but because it is an opportunity to maintain a regular and consistent routine.
Sometimes all that is needed is a few more seconds of attention.
Can the look of the neck and décolletage be improved even after 50?
It is definitely possible to improve certain aspects of the skin's appearance at any age.
Maintaining moisture can reduce dryness and improve the appearance of fine lines.
Consistent sun protection can help reduce additional damage.
And certain active ingredients may contribute to improvement in skin texture and the appearance of aging signs, when used correctly and according to the sensitivity of the skin.
At the same time, it is important to keep realistic expectations.
Creams and serums cannot fully return loose skin to its previous state or eliminate deep wrinkles.
In cases where there are significant changes in texture, pigmentation, or skin laxity, you can consult a dermatologist about additional treatment options.
But even without advanced treatments, a simple skincare routine can contribute to the feeling of comfort and the groomed appearance of the area.
Good care is a matter of attention
I believe one of the beautiful things about self-care is that we do not have to wait until something bothers us to start treating it.
We can give attention to our skin at every stage of life.
Not out of fear of aging, but out of a desire to maintain its health, comfort, and appearance.
The neck and décolletage are an inseparable part of us.
They are exposed to the sun, to movements, and to the natural changes that occur over the years, exactly like the facial skin.
And therefore there is no reason for them to remain outside our skincare routine.
Our approach at OrOrgani
At OrOrgani we believe good care does not have to be complicated.
Sometimes a small change in our existing habits can make a difference.
If you already use a hydrating serum, a face cream, and sunscreen, remember to check whether they also suit the neck and décolletage.
Dedicate to these areas the same attention you give the face.
Do not wait for the appearance of wrinkles or spots to start protecting them.
And above all, remember that the goal is not to stop time, but to treat our skin well at every age.
Because a complete skincare routine does not stop at the jawline. It continues to the neck and décolletage, and gives the whole area the attention it deserves.
