Morning and Evening Skincare Routine: What Does Our Skin Really Need?
Morning and Evening Skincare Routine: What Does Our Skin Really Need?

A good skincare routine doesn't have to be long or complicated. Sometimes it's precisely the simple actions — the ones we keep up day after day — that make the biggest difference.

Over the years our skin changes. It may lose moisture faster, produce less of its natural oil, and need a slightly different kind of attention.

But that doesn't mean we need to fill the bathroom shelf with dozens of products.

I believe a proper skincare routine begins with a simple understanding: in the morning we focus on protecting the skin, and in the evening on cleansing, nourishing, and supporting its natural renewal processes.

The morning routine: preparing the skin for a new day

During the night the skin continues its natural activity. It secretes oil, loses a little moisture, and sometimes residues of the products we applied in the evening collect on it.

That's why it's worth starting the morning with a gentle cleanse — without drying the skin or damaging its natural protective layer.

After cleansing, we can give the skin moisture with a toner or a hydrating essence, if we enjoy using them.

The next step is a serum suited to our skin's needs. It might be a serum with antioxidants, like vitamin C, or hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid.

Then comes the moisturizer, which helps keep the water in the skin and supports its protective barrier.

And finally, the step I recommend never giving up: a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30.

Sun radiation is one of the main factors in premature skin aging, so daily protection is no less important than any luxurious serum or cream.

The evening routine: cleanse, nourish, and let the skin renew

If there's one step I'm especially strict about, it's cleansing the face before bed.

During the day, oil, dirt, makeup residue, and sunscreen collect on the skin. That's why it's important to remove them gently and thoroughly.

After cleansing, we can use a treatment serum according to the skin's needs, and then a moisturizer — or a richer cream, if the skin needs it.

During the night the skin continues its natural maintenance and renewal processes. A suitable evening routine can help maintain moisture and support the skin barrier.

Anyone who uses retinol or other active ingredients that require a period of adjustment should start gradually and follow the product instructions, to avoid unnecessary irritation.

It's important to remember that mature skin can be sensitive too, and using lots of active ingredients won't necessarily bring better results.

In what order should the products be applied?

One of the questions I'm asked most often is in what order the products should be used.

The simple rule is to usually start with the lighter textures and move toward the richer ones.

After cleansing we apply toner or a hydrating essence, then serum, and then moisturizer.

If we use a face oil, we generally include it in the later steps, according to the product instructions.

In the morning routine, sunscreen is the last step of skincare, before makeup.

There's no need to wait long minutes between products. In most cases it's enough to let each layer absorb and settle a little before continuing.

Fewer products, more consistency

I always say that a good skincare routine isn't measured by the number of products we own, but by how well they suit the skin — and by our consistency.

A gentle cleanse, a suitable serum, a moisturizer, and sunscreen can be an excellent foundation for a daily routine.

We don't have to use every new product that comes to market, and we don't need to replace the routine every time a new trend appears.

It's worth getting to know our skin, paying attention to how it responds, and giving products time to do their work.

And above all, remembering that skincare is not only about external appearance.

These are a few minutes a day that we dedicate to ourselves — in the morning before the day begins, and in the evening when everything calms down.

Because well-cared-for skin doesn't need dozens of products. It needs the right products, consistent use, and a little attention every day.
