Sometimes the skin starts itching with no warning at all. Red, slightly swollen areas appear, and the only thing you want to do is scratch them.
Hives, also known as urticaria, can cause raised, itchy lesions that appear and disappear in different areas of the body.
One of the simplest ways to give the skin temporary relief is a cold compress.

Fill a bowl with cold water.
Dip the cloth and wring it out slightly.
Place it gently on the itchy area.
Leave it on for 10–15 minutes.
When the cloth warms up, dip it again in the cold water.
You can repeat this several times a day, as needed.
- A soft, clean cotton cloth.
- A bowl of cold water.
- A dry towel.
After the compress, you can apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer if the skin feels dry.
Why Does It Help?
The cold may temporarily reduce the feeling of itching and calm the skin. It also helps you avoid repeated rubbing, which can increase the irritation.
Did You Know?
With hives, the lesions can change place and shape during the day. That is why a cold compress is meant to ease the feeling, not to prevent the lesions from appearing.
I love solutions you can prepare in a moment. A small cloth, cold water and a few minutes of rest can help you get through those moments when the skin simply won't stop itching.
If the hives are accompanied by swelling of the tongue or throat or by difficulty breathing, urgent medical help is needed.
